Buttermilk Biscuits

Buttermilk Biscuits

 

2 cups flour

4 tsp  baking powder

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp.  baking soda

1/3 cup shortening

~ 1 cup buttermilk

 

Prheat oven to 475

In a large bowl, thoroughly mix flour, baking powder, salt and soda together  with a fork.   Using a pastry blender, cut in shortening until mixture resembles course cornmeal.   

 Add buttermilk and mix lightly just until dough cleans sides of bowl.  Turn out onto floured surface and with floured hands, knead gently 3 or 4 turns.

Roll or pat with hands to ½” thickness.  Cut with round cookie cutter and place on UNGREASED baking sheet.  Bake 10-12 minutes or until very lightly golden on top.
